A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
